Tier 4

ati - Assume Theoretically Impossible

Assume Theoretically Impossible

Input: $ARGUMENTS

Core Move

Assume: a fundamental law of nature, logic, or mathematics prevents this. Not “hard” — impossible. Like perpetual motion or faster-than-light travel.

This forces you to stop trying and redirect. Extremely productive when the real answer is “you can’t, but you can do THIS instead.”

Procedure

Step 1: State the Claim

What is being assumed impossible?

Step 2: Force the Assumption

“A fundamental barrier prevents this. No amount of engineering, time, or resources can overcome it.”

Step 3: Trace Implications

If theoretically impossible:

  1. What’s the barrier? — Which law, theorem, or logical constraint blocks this? Name it specifically.
  2. What’s the closest achievable thing? — What’s the nearest approximation that IS possible?
  3. What should we stop doing? — What effort is wasted pursuing the impossible?
  4. What changes about strategy? — If this door is permanently closed, which other doors matter more?
  5. What’s the silver lining? — Impossibility results often reveal deep structure. What do we learn from WHY it’s impossible?
  6. Who is wasting resources on this? — Is anyone currently pursuing the impossible version?

Step 4: Test the Assumption

  • Is there an actual impossibility proof?
  • Or are we pattern-matching to “seems impossible”?
  • Have “impossible” things been achieved before in this domain?
  • Is the impossibility conditional (impossible given X, but what if X changes)?
  • Are we confusing “impossible for us now” with “impossible in principle”?

Step 5: Synthesize

CLAIM: [stated]
ASSUMING THEORETICALLY IMPOSSIBLE:
  Barrier: [specific law/theorem/constraint]
  Closest achievable: [best alternative]
  Should stop: [wasted effort]
  Learned from impossibility: [structural insight]
IMPOSSIBILITY CONFIDENCE: [high/medium/low]
If low: what would prove possibility?
NEXT MOVE: [redirect to achievable alternative]

When to Use

  • Suspect you’re chasing something fundamentally impossible
  • Need to find the best achievable alternative
  • Want to learn from impossibility
